11-foot sawfish discovered useless within the Florida Keys

MONROE COUNTY, Florida – An 11-foot female sawfish was found dead near Marvin Key on Tuesday afternoon.

The 400- to 500-pound sawfish is being studied by scientists in Port Charlotte, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s office.

A Lower Keys Marine MP was helping the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission when callers reported they found the protected fish near Marvin Key around 2 p.m.

Monroe County MPs said the fish was loaded onto the sheriff’s patrol boat and later taken to the Port Charlotte laboratory by FWC.

According to the MCSO, sawfish are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
