DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (AP / WSVN) – A Florida man told police officers he was “teaching him a lesson” when he tried to pull a live alligator he stole from a mini golf course onto the roof of a cocktail lounge on the beach to throw, the authorities said.

The 32-year-old man was arrested early Thursday when Daytona Beach Shores police saw him attempting to dump the alligator on the roof of a cocktail lounge just off Highway A1A, according to a police report.

Police identified the man as William Hodge.

Officers then saw the man grab the alligator by the tail, slap it against the building’s awning, throw it to the ground and stomp on it twice, the report said.

The Homestead, Florida man was arrested on charges of possession and injury to an alligator, unarmed break-in into an occupied home, theft and criminal mischief.

The man told officers that he stole the alligator from an enclosure on a nearby mini golf course.

An online court record showed no lawyer for the man who stayed in jail on Friday morning.
