Johnson & Johnson Single-Shot COVID-19 Vaccine in Combat towards International Pandemic – CBS Miami
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A day after an independent FDA advisory board recommended approval of Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine, the agency granted the company full emergency clearance to begin sales.
“The vaccine is highly effective in preventing serious COVID illnesses,” said Dr. Greg Poland, Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Mayo Clinic.

According to the FDA, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is only 66% effective overall – much less than Moderna and Pfizer. However, the vaccine is 85% effective in preventing serious illness and provides full protection against COVID-19 deaths 28 days after the shot.
“The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has a 66% effectiveness rate and I’ve been told that it will essentially eliminate hospitalizations and deaths, but that’s great news considering what happened last year,” said Mike Avila , residing in Miami.
Avila was among more than 200 people who participated in the Johnson & Johnson vaccine study. He got the two doses of the vaccine and said he had already seen the benefits.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine, while less effective, has other advantages over the other two vaccines. It’s more of a dose than two. It can be stored longer and at temperatures warmer than Moderna and Pfizer’s vaccine.
However, the news of the third approval of the coronavirus vaccine comes after UM researchers found more locally more contagious strains of the virus.
“We see that about 25% of the positive samples actually reflect the UK, the variant that came from England,” said Dr. David Andrews from UM Miller School of Medicine.
Andrews added that that’s not all they discovered.
