Man shoots at cafe in southwest Miami-Dade earlier than main officers go on the hunt

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was arrested Thursday morning after a shooting in front of a cafeteria in a mall led to a police chase.

According to Angel Rodriguez of the Miami-Dade Police Department, the shooting took place just after 9 a.m. at a mall near Hammocks Boulevard and Southwest 104th Street.

Rodriguez said the suspect got out of his car, shot the shop, and then got back in his vehicle and escaped from the scene.

“I heard the shot and on that second turn the second came in and I saw the guy and my instincts kicked in and I just ran,” said JD Betancourt, who witnessed the shooting outside the Miwi Cafe.

Officers spotted the car when the suspect was trying to get away and chased the vehicle, Rodriguez said.

The police chase ended in the area of ​​Southwest 136th Street and 157th Avenue.

Sky 10 was over the scene just after 9:30 a.m. when the suspect was handcuffed and placed on the sidewalk.


He appeared to have an injury to his forehead and was treated by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue staff.

Rodriguez said it was too early in the investigation to determine a motive for the shooting.

No injuries were reported.
