Miami Seashore is stepping up police presence to curb the most recent crime
Up to 50 new officers, some on ATVs, patrol Miami Beach this holiday weekend as the people partying.
Crowds line the streets to celebrate Labor Day weekend.
“It’s like a big playground,” said Daylin Arrington.
Miami Beach Police are stepping up patrols after a violent spate of crime recently, including when a young father, Dustin Wakefield, was murdered on Ocean Drive last week.
So far, 40 officers have been seconded to patrol the streets of Miami Beach, plus 10 additional Miami-Dade officers every weekend.
More code compliance teams, park rangers, homeless and hygiene teams are also taking to the streets.
“Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said it was the highest level police force in the entertainment district.
“We arrested 3,154 people in South Beach this year alone,” he said.
The patrols are the latest in efforts to make the area a safer home for tourists and locals alike.
The additional patrols should remain at least until the end of the year.
