Miami Soccer teammate arrested in Bryan Pata’s homicide

A former University of Miami football player was arrested nearly 15 years ago in the murder of his teammate Bryan Pata.

Rashaun Jones from Lake City was arrested with the assistance of US marshals, the Miami-Dade County Police Department said Thursday afternoon.

Jones, 35, was a former Hurricanes defensive back. According to police, he is charged with first degree murder.

Rashaun Jones was arrested in the 2006 murder of Bryan Pata, his teammate on the University of Miami football team.

Pata, a promising defensive lineman from Miami, was fatally shot in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Kendall on November 7, 2006 after returning home from training. He was 22.

“I can tell you that we never had [made the arrest] … without the help of the community, “Det. This is what Juan Segovia of the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a video posted on social media. “Not only did the family never give up, they just never stopped struggling to find out about Bryan Pata. But the community never stopped contacting us. Even if we got 1,000 tips, but only one person put all the pieces together, that was it. And that’s exactly what happened in this case. “

Pata, who was six feet and weighed 280 pounds, was remembered as a gentle giant with a big smile and the ability to play in the NFL.

His family has been waiting for years to find out who killed him.

“You know, we wait so long to find the answer: who killed my son,” said his mother, Jeanette Pata, in an interview in 2017.

Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez wrote in a tweet: “Our homicide investigators have been searching tirelessly for Bryan Pata’s killer for almost 15 years. They take great pride in their work ethic as they always represent their victims. Today together with [State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle], We have done justice to his family and our community. “

Segovia said the case was complicated because Pata didn’t have many enemies and didn’t conflict with the law.

“His whole world was about football and his family,” said Segovia. “It’s not like he has many enemies. He wasn’t involved in the criminal element. He was a young man looking forward to a future in the NFL. All he wanted was to play soccer in the National Football League. He wanted to take care of his family one day. “

MDPD homicide investigators, assisted by US marshals, arrested Rashaun Jones in connection with the 2006 murder of Bryan Pata. Thank you to the investigators for helping us bring justice to the family.
