NASCAR arrives in Homestead even earlier for the 2021 version of the annual racing weekend – NBC 6 South Florida
For the third season in a row, NASCAR’s annual visit to South Florida will be scheduled at a different time – and thus a completely new approach for the 43 drivers involved.
After nearly two decades as the final race on the schedule, Homestead-Miami Speedway went from holding the Dixie Vodka 400 last June to the first race after a two-week stint at Daytona to kick off the 2021 season.
Last year’s Homestead winner Denny Hamlin will seek to make history with yet another trip down the winning streak. The # 11 Toyota driver has won three times on the South Florida circuit and paired him up with Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart for the most wins at the event.
Last season, Hamlin and fellow rider Kevin Harvick were two of the top NASCAR Cup Seires winners – a total of 16 trips to Victory Lane.
“I think there will be more status quo from where we were last year,” said Hamlin. “That doesn’t mean we and Kevin will dominate as it’s a mile and a half. In the case of medium-sized teams, the resources they do not have are given a little more consideration.
The first two races of the 2021 season both went to the first-time winners – Michael McDowell won the Daytona 500 on February 14 and Christopher Bell won last week’s street circuit race on the track.
It was no shock to Hamlin and other veterans to see this.
“We were on a super speedway. I think the winners list is, “Oh wow, where are our superstars?” But we are about to have a part of the season where you will see some of your normal winners in brackets, ”he said.
Homestead-Miami Speedway will welcome a limited number of fans for the Xfinity Series Contender Boats 250 and Cup Series Dixie Vodka 400 on Sunday.
“Last year we were the first major sports venue in the world to welcome fans back and we’re excited to see more of them here for two days this year,” said Al Garcia, President of Homestead-Miami Speedway. “Both days before and after the race, fans will be treated to great entertainment that will give all of our guests a real ‘taste of Miami’.”
