NASCAR Insider Reveals Why Denny Hamlin Escaped Sanction for Pit Lane Drama at Homestead-Miami

Last weekend at Homestead-Miami, there were a few close calls in the pit lane. However, the NASCAR officials were surprisingly lenient on a few occasions. To be precise, there were a few pit lane mishaps, which surprisingly went unpunished. First was when Kyle Larson happened to bump Martin Truex Jr into a spin. This resulted in the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to end up backwards in his pit box. However, there was also an incident where Denny Hamlin had a close call with Landon Cassill.

Cassill’s pit box was right in front of Hamlin’s and the latter was pulling out, just as the former was pulling in. The #77 car was forced to slam on the brakes, and Hamlin had to drive through a couple of empty pit boxes to avoid a collision. In light of this, some people wondered if that was legal, since Hamlin was endangering some pit crew members.

Why was Denny Hamlin cleared of wrongdoing?

According to Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass, the drivers are given leeway to drive through at most three pit boxes. The rule says, “A vehicle will not be permitted to drive through more than three pit boxes entering/exiting their assigned pit box. Pit road openings, entrances to infield and eliminated pit boxes do not count towards driving through more than three pit boxes. Vacant pit boxes will count towards driving through more than three pit boxes.”

As a result, Denny Hamlin escaped any potential penalty, despite the hairy moment. Without a doubt, it was very fortunate that nobody was hurt, and he had a close call with Kyle Larson as well. In the end, everyone was able to walk away unscathed and continue with their respective race runs. Hamlin eventually finished in 7th place, behind teammate Martin Truex Jr, who had his own shenanigans.
