The 24-year-old mom was killed subsequent to the daughter after the TSA officer modified at Miami airport

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade detectives are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old officer who worked for the Transportation Security Administration at the Department of Homeland Security.

A gunman in a dark four-door Nissan killed Leshonte Jones on Monday in the Coral Bay Cove apartments in the Naranja neighborhood in south Miami-Dade County, police said.

“We’re trying to find out what the motive was here,” said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta. “We’re trying to find out what caused this senseless violence.”

Jones’ three-year-old daughter was injured in the shooting on S. Dixie Highway 25801. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue staff took her to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. According to Zabaleta, she was in a stable condition.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence that took a young, lively officer away from her family and us too early,” said Daniel Ronan, a TSA security director, in a statement.

Jones returned home after a shift as a TSA officer at Miami International Airport.

“Words just can’t really convey the immense loss we are all feeling right now,” said Ronan.

Detectives have asked anyone with information about the fatal shots to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
