The MLK Day Parade returns to the streets of Miami

MIAMI – Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood on Monday for the return of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.

The annual event honoring the late civil rights leader had to be practically celebrated last year due to COVID-19, but will be back in person in 2022, giving residents a chance to see the floats and bands the parade is known for.

The theme of this year’s parade is “Driving the Dream Forward”, inspired by King’s vision of all people coming together and walking hand in hand towards economic growth and civility.

“This dream follows Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, not just economic and community development, but building unity for the community,” said event organizer Candyce Haynes.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the parade will walk down Northwest 54th Street, exiting from 10th Avenue and continuing to 32nd Avenue. It is expected to last two and a half hours.

The route has significance as it passes through areas King visited during his frequent trips to Miami.
