WP Produce opens a brand new packaging facility in Homestead, Florida.

Desbry Tropical avocados are available year round in Florida and the Dominican Republic.

Now that the Florida season is underway, second-generation, family-owned grower-mail order company WP Produce has announced a new packaging facility in Homestead, Florida.

“We have been based in Miami for nearly 40 years,” said Chris Gonzalez, VP of Sales. “Our growth in recent years, combined with our vision for the future and confidence in the potential of tropical avocados and other tropical plants, dictated the need for this new facility. We’ve also been following the avocado decline in Florida for years, so we wanted to reinvest in Florida to support the industry and growers battling the laurel wilt and real estate development pressures against productive groves. ”

Big and vibrant Desbry® Tropical Avocados offer retailers higher margins and category growth, more fruit, and more value and convenience for food service operators, which is why both Florida and Dominican Tropical avocados have gained traction and adoption.

“We’re probably best known for our Dominican fruit, but we’ve always supplied tropical avocados from Florida,” said Gonzalez. “The Florida season started in May and is now really getting underway with higher quantities and better tasting fruits. Supplies were tighter than usual this year, but we always make sure that our contract customers have the fruit they need for peak summer avocado consumption. ”

Serving retail and food service customers in the US, Canada and Europe, WP uses Hazel Technologies’ shelf life extension bags to maintain quality and reduce shrinkage.
“It’s great to see the growing interest in tropical avocados from retailers and food service customers across North America. This new packing house will help us keep pace with demand and deliver premium quality Desbry® fruit from coast to coast. Our customers rely on WP to deliver to destinations far away and we will keep making improvements to ensure we can meet and exceed their needs as a preferred supplier. ”

WP Produce has loose fruits in packs of 8, 9, 10 and 12 pieces. Double-layer boxes are available in 16, 18, 20 and 24 pieces. For retailers whose buyers prefer packaged items for safety or convenience, WP Produce also offers two numbered poly / mesh bags that ship to retailers in a 25 pound carton.

As part of a comprehensive, value-added merchandising program, WP Produce also provides retailers with signs, recipe pulling pads, and eye-catching display cases to educate shoppers and drive sales for this distinctive fruit growing in the avocado category.

“My family has enjoyed tropical avocados as part of our meals for generations, and everyone here in Florida has them,” said Gonzalez.

Tropical avocados are known and loved throughout Florida and the east coast of the United States, as well as in the Caribbean and many parts of the world. They’re gaining traction in the U.S. as retailers expand the avocado category, and buyers and cooks learn more about this unique variety of avocado. Tropical avocados, which stay green when ripe and are about three times larger than the more popular Haas variety, have a tough texture and stay fresh longer after being cut.

Tropical avocados are perfect for summer salads, pico de gallo, ceviche and any fresh, flavorful meal and snack occasion. The mild, creamy fruit complements summer recipes perfectly.
